I’m looking at paying salaries twice the local median income within the next 5 years to guys who really know what they are doing. I’m currently making the transition from mechanic to business owner I’m both right now and want to train one more guy before I get out of the shop altogether.

For people who are serious about this as a career, there is very good money in it. Or you can make an easy 6 figures if you are specialized in say BMW, Lexus. If we don’t have mechanics and all the other «grunt» workers, those going to school have no one to take care of them nor build what they dream up. Money is not happiness in life. Do what you love. If you’re great in electrical and can diagnose electrical issues in dealing with modern day vehicles, then you can make a decent living in this profession. Anyone can turn a wrench and loosen some bolts, but diagnostics along with working swift and efficient is how you make it in this field.

The most important thing to remember about being automotive technician is having patience and paying close attention to detail, because you don’t want to waste time on flat rate commission doing the job wrong when it should have been corrected the first time.

Many mistakes will cause you to starve on flat rate if you’re not getting paid on straight time. Damn, my fellow US mechanics are getting some pretty good money! Flat rate is if a job in their manual calls for 5 hours they pay you for 5 hours whether you do it in 10 hours or one hour.

So as you see there is excellent money to be made if you are good and efficient and the garage has a good reputation and business.
